Junior Welfare League Organized to fill the need for a general charity group during the depths of the depression, the Junior Welfare League has steadily expanded its projects and functions to meet the ever changing needs of Enid. However, the League's success over the years would not have been possible without the unqualified support, both financial and moral, of the citizens of Enid. From these citizens came both the reason for being and the means for doing. It all began in the fall of 1930 with the late Mrs. Richard Gentry and the late Mrs. Leo Neal as cofounders and the late Mrs. H. G. McKeever as first president. During its early years, the League was the collecting and distributing agency for food, fuel and clothing for needy families. To these duties were added providing hot lunches for schools and a baby clinic with free medical services. During
these depression times, Junior Welfare members had regular routes of
milk and food delivery to families with limited income. Each member
assisted weekly at the baby clinic to supplement the work of doctors
and nurses. The hot lunch program was continued with members planning
menus, purchasing and preparing food daily. Work was also done for the
Orphans' Home at Helena and Carmen. The Junior Welfare League also participated
in projects benefiting the Crippled Children's Hospital in Oklahoma
City and Helena State Training School for Boys.
